WILLIAM MAX SHAFER 
WILLIAM MAX was born on May 22nd, 1922 in Redkey,Indiana. WILLIAM MAX's father was EUGENE EDWIN SHAFER and his mother was ETHEL MORNA BLACKBURN. His maternal grandparents were GEORGE ALLEN BLACKBURN and NETTIE MAY MORRIS. He had a brother and two sisters, named CHESTER EUGENE, THELMA PEARL and MARY ELLEN. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 22 on June 14th, 1944 in Over the English Channel.General Notes
William Max Shafer was known as Max to family and friends but called Bill
when he served in the Air Force during World War II. He went into the
Air Force after the outbreak of the war and received his training at San
Marcos Air Force Base, Texas from which he received his wings on Jan. 15,
1944 as a navigator on a B-17. He was stationed in England on April 19,
1944 and had made two bombing missions each day from D-Day on June 6,
1944. On June 14 during the 13th bombing mission of his plane, it
appeared to erupt in flames and had to go out of formation over the
English Channel. Several parachutes were seen coming from the plane but
no one was ever found. He was awarded the Air Medal and an Oak Leaf
Cluster.
