John was born in 1700 in , , Craven, NC. John's father was Thomas Stephens and his mother is Mary JR. His paternal grandparents were Richard Stephens and Mary Lincoln; his maternal grandfather was Thomas JR and his maternal grandmother is Wife. He had a brother and five sisters, named Thomas, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Anna and Frances. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 88 in 1788 in Rowana, Cumberland, North Carolina. He was buried in 1779.-
