1. Sutton: History of Dudley Castle and Priory, including Genealogical
account of the families of Sutton and Ward. Written by Charles Twamley,
published London 1867. (Dudley is now part of the City of Birmingham in
the county of Warwickshire. According to my map book the 13th century
castle still remains.)
2. Dudley, John (Sutton) de, sixth Baron Dudley (1401?-1487), statesman,
regularly summoned to parliament from 1440 to 1487; viceroy of Ireland,
1428-30; employed on various diplomatic missions; KG, 1451; taken
prisoner by the Yorkists at the Battle of St. Albans, 1455; received into
favor by Edward IV. Sharon."
The arms on his seal are two lions passant; on either side is a smaller
shield; on the dexter side is a cross patonce or flory; on the sinister
side is a blue lion rampant, which shield Glover probably intended for
Sutton's paternal coat, if so, the lion should be green. In a roll of
arms of temp. EII, Sir Richard de Sutton bears "de or, a un Lyon rampaund
de vert." Erdeswick commented that Glover, Somerset Herald, did cut off
one of Dudley's lion's tails, because the Warsop Suttons bore the
single-tailed lion.
Some sources list his birth on 25 December 1400.
