Walter was born about 1208 in Thurrock, Essex, England. Walter's father was Henry de Grey and his mother was Isolda de Bardolf. His paternal grandfather was Richard de Grey; his maternal grandparents were Robert (Hugh) de Bardolf of Condor and Isobel Aquillion. He had six brothers and a sister, named Hugh, William, Robert de Grey of, Henry, Richard de Grey of, John and Joan.
