Thomas the Rich was born in Berkeley Castle, SW of Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.  Thomas the Rich's father was Maurice the Magnanimous de Berkeley and his mother was Eva la Zouche.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas the Wise de Berkeley and Margaret (Joane) de Ferrers; his maternal grandparents were Eudo la Zouche and Millicent de Cantelou. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Maurice de Berkeley of, Eudo, John, Peter, Isabel and Millicent (Ela).  He died on October 27th, 1361 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England.  He was buried in Altar tomb in Berkeley Church.

‌Thomas the Rich and Catherine were married in a religious ceremony on May 30th, 1347 in Charfield, Gloucester.  They had four sons named Thomas, Maurice, Edmund and John.
