According to UK genealogist, Brian Tompsett:
" In 800 at the decrease of King Brithric, Egbert was called by the voice
of his countrymen to assume the Government of Wessex, and he subsequently
succeeded in reducing all the Kingdoms of the Heptarchy under his sway.
His reign, a long and glorious one, is memorable for the great victories
he achieved over the Danes. See Europaisch Stammtafeln Bund II tafel 58."

1997: "Egbert was the first West Saxon king to control most of England.
His father, Ealhmund, was for a short time the king of Kent. While still
a youth, Egbert made an enemy of the Saxon King Beorhtic. Egbert was
forced to flee England. He went to France where he lived in exile in
Charlemagne's court. This exile lasted for a number of years. There he
studied the art of war and served Charlemagne. He married Redburga, the
sister (or neice) of Charlemagne. His oldest son, Athelwolf was born in
France, around 795 or 796....His son Athelwolf succeeded him. Egbert and
his wife Redburga had at least two children, Athelwolf (795-858), and
Edith (Eadgyth) who was a nun at Polesworth Abbey in Warwickshire."
