Richard Thomas was born on July 4th, 1846 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. Richard Thomas' father was George Washington Owen and his mother was Elenda Eleanor Long. His paternal grandparents were Amasa Owen and Sally Butler. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, John, George, Sarah Jane, Margaret, Eliza and Jane. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died after 1872.-
