Reinholt Mentzen was born on June 13th, 1778 in Norderhus, Lesja, Opland, Norway. Reinholt Mentzen's father was Mentz Olsen Schelderup and his mother was Anna Johan Henriksdotter Ziegler. His paternal grandparents were Ole Mentzson Scheldrup and Guri Christoffersdotter Norderhus; his maternal grandparents were Johan Heinrich Reinholtsen Ziegler and Marie Haldogsdotter Alme.
