Maria Catharina was born on October 21st, 1728 in Neckar-Bischofsheim, Germany. Maria Catharina's father was Johan Andreas Frey and her mother was Catharina Barbara Ritter. Her paternal grandparents were Johan Martin Frey and Appolonia Jungert; her maternal grandfather was Johan Albrecht Ritter. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Johan Adam, Johan Nicholaus, Johan Christoph, Johan Matthias, Salome, Maria Elizabeth, Maria Eva, Maria Magdalena and Maria Margaretha. She is the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
