His paternal grandfather was Ulf (Wolf) Thorkilsson and his paternal grandmother is Estrith (Margaret) of Denmark; his maternal grandparents were Yaroslav I the Wise Vladimirovich of Kiev and Ingigerd (Anna) Olafsdottir of Sweden. He had five brothers named Harald IV Hen Svendsson of, Knud II (St.) Svendsson of, Oluf I Hunger Svendsson of, Niels Svendsson of and Svein Svendsson of.
