Cater was born after 1800. Cater's father was Gabriel Critton and her mother was Catherine Johnson. Her paternal grandparents were John Sr. Critton and UNKNOWN Mary; her maternal grandparents were Griffith Johnson and Elizabeth G. Thomas. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jacob, Gabriel, Julia Ann, Amie and Elizabeth. She is the oldest of the six children.-
