J. Henry was born about 1838 in Kentucky. J. Henry's father was Davidson Lents and his mother is Elizabeth Slaughter. His paternal grandparents were John Lents and Rachel S. Cline. He has three brothers and two sisters, named William, John J., Benjamin Franklin, Elizabeth and Mary I.. He is the oldest of the six children.
