Viola was born in 1893.1 Viola's father was Jasper Williamson Underwood and her mother is Martha Helen Hollingsworth. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph D., Jr. Underwood and Macariah Dunnagan. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Walter Williamson, Luther Clifton, Nina, Irene, Mary M. and Elizabeth Louisa. She is the second youngest of the seven children.
