Nancy Jane was born in July 1826 in Grayson Co., Virginia.1 Nancy Jane's father was Joseph Burgess Thomas and her mother was Rebecca Skaggs. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Skaggs and Nancy Davis. She had four brothers and a sister, named Henry Clay, Isaac Thomas, James W., John Hardin and Mary Ann.
