Freeman Jasper,Rev. was born on March 3rd, 1790 in Fayette Co./Pennsylvania.1 Freeman Jasper,Rev.'s father was William Smalley and his mother was Prudence Hoel. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin,Jr. Smalley and Rachel Crasson\Crosson\Cresson. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, William,Jr., James Knight, Jesse G., William, Benjamin, Hiram, Benjamin F., Rachael, Mary, Martha Kathryn, Prudence Ann and Henry T.. He had a half-brother named Henry T.. He died at the age of 84 on October 31st, 1874 in Xenia Bourbon Co. Kansas.1 General Notes

Grew up near the present-day Clarksville ,Ohio. He fought for six mo
nt hs in the War of 1812. He had been a member of the Baptist church in C
lin ton County, Ohio, since 1808. After his discharge from the army he b
eg an to preach to his friends and neighbors. he was ordained by his ch
ur ch in 1817.
Smalley's first trip to Texas was to visit relatives. His aunt, Mary Sm
al ley and her daughter Rachel had movedwith their housbands , Willi
am Ra bb and Joseph Newman to Pecan Point, Texas in 1819. In 1822 Small
ey trave led to New Orleans by boat and walked to Peacan Point, where he v
isited h is cousins and preached to the community, thus evidently becomi
ng the fir st Baptist minister to preach in Texas. About 1832 he moved h
is family f rom Ohio to Higginsville, Illinois, shere he established a Bap
tist chur ch in his move in1834. His son Freeman Smalley Jr. , mov
ed to Brushy Cre ek , south of the site of present -day Roundrock , Tex
as in 1846. In 18 48 Smalley Sr. followed him to Texas . He preached whe
re ever he could, b ut his audiences were small because of his abolitioni
st views. He organiz ed Union Baptist Church in Williamson County, the fi
rst antislavery Bapti st church in Texas , in 1849. he took a Unionist st
and during the Civil W ar and endured threats and robbery. At the reque
st of his children he so ld his land in Texas and moved to Bourbon Coun
ty , Kansas.
