Her paternal grandparents were Richard Skaggs and Jincy Jane Martin; her maternal grandfather is William Sutton and her maternal grandmother was Mary Lucretia Skaggs. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Charlie Bruce, James Franklin, Earnest Arthur, Elliot Washington, William Bradley, Lucian, Nora Lee, Bessie Pearl, Verda Lore, Eliza Ellen and Emma Catherine.
