Joseph was born in 1866 in Texas.1 Joseph's father was Travis Roberts and his mother was Mary Ann Birtrong. His paternal grandparents were William, Sr. Roberts and Elizabeth Pryor. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Andrew Jackson, Thomas, George W., Benjamin Travis, William Monroe, Delila, Sylvia Ann, Nancy Elizabeth and Omie. He is the fifth youngest of the ten children.-
