John's father was David Preston and his mother was Sallie (Sarah) Berry. His paternal grandparents were Moses Preston and Ana (Sparkey) Amos. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William M., David, Jr., Edward, Jubal, Mahola, Margaret, Rachel and Renee.
