His paternal grandfather was Patrick Henry Preston and his paternal grandmother is Ophelia Ellen Roberts. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin Ernest, Edwin Hughes, Gerald Booker, Homer Sory, Marvin Westley, Roy Wilson Jackson, Bertha Marie, Jessie Irene and Nannie May.
