Her paternal grandfather was Mannam Beall and her paternal grandmother is Frances "Fannie" Lewis; her maternal grandparents are Benjamin Jenkins and Elizabeth Brantley. She had a brother and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named John Lewis Brantley, Eliza, Emeline "Emily", Mary Paige, Caroline Jenkins, Sarah Burke and Benajah. She is the third youngest of the eight children.-
