Martha was born on October 20th, 1843. Martha's father was George Washington Swisher and her mother was Harriet Clayton. Her paternal grandparents were Frederick H. Swisher and Hannah Morris. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named George Lee, John Frederick, Charlotte, Olive Maria, Virginia, Joanna, Emmaline K., Susannah Belle and Ida May.
