Roger de St. John, b rot her of Thomas .  In July 111 8 with hi s broth er
John, he de fende d the cast l e of La Motte -Gautie r for He n ry I
against
F ulk, Count of An j ou, but was forc e d to su rrender. Before 1121 he
gave
the church ofCompto n in West Sussex t o Lewes Priory.  H e m. Cecil y ,
daughter o f Robertde la H aie, by Muriel, pro bably daughter of Col swe
ge n, tenant-in -chief in Lincs in 1086 with whom he r ec eive d the honor
of
Halna ker in Sus sex. Roger d. in or be fore 1 130.  His widow was li ving
in 1162 an d dead in 1177.
Besides hi s so ns William and Rob e rt, dealt with b elow, Roge r de St.
John
had a da ughte r Muriel, who m. an Orva l and wa s t he mother of Mab el,
wife
of Adam de Po rt of Basing, thro ugh whom b oth St -J ean-le-Thomas and th
e
