ASCE LIN G OE L, son and heir. He took part in William the Con queror's
in vasion of the F r ench Vexin in Jul y 1087 and dest royed the vineyards
rou nd Ma ntes. He built a strongly forti f ied castl e at Br e va l. In
1089
he
too k the ca stle of Ivr y b y stratagem fro m Wil liam de Brte u il and
delivered it up t o D uke Rober t. William redeemed the castle f rom t he
Duke an d depriv ed Asce lin o f the pro vostship of Ivry. Th ereafte r A
sc elin c aptured Willia m, an d ri gorous lyimpr isoned him at B r eval
until
he obtained h is freedom o n th e terms of amone y payment, the ce ssion
of
the c astle of Ivry and the mar ri a ge of his da ughter Isabel to Asc
e lin.
I n the f ollowing yea r William a tt e mpted to retake the cas tle, but
was
defeate d by Ascelin, the abbe y of Ivry being burntin th e conf lict .
William then. appe aled to the King of Fr ance a nd the Duke of No rmandy
,
wh o in, the spring of 1092, aided by a lev e en ma sse of the surroun
ding
p op ulation, besiege d A sceli n at Breval. Asce lin w as forced to
capitulat
e
and surrende r the cast le of Ivry, whic h was res t ored to William. On
t h
e
d eath of William de Br teuil in 1103, A scelin took t he pa rt of
Willi am's
n e phew, Ralf de Granc ei, against Eusta ce d e Brte u il,William's
ill egitimat e s on, in the struggl e fo r the succe ssion.
He ma rr ied Isabel, i llegitimat e dau gh ter of William de Br t euil, so

heir [i n Norma ndy] of William FITZ OSBERN , 1s t Ear l of Heref ord . He
died
