I think it is probable that your Joseph M. Witten, b. 1872, was the s/o James Witten and 2/w Mary _______. The 1880 Census of Grayson Co, KY shows the following:

#80 - Witten, J(ames), 64 KY VA VA); and (3/w) P(_____), 43, (NC NC NC); W(illiam) D(avid), 15 (KY KY NC); R(obert) L., 13 (KY KY NC); J(oseph?) M., 8 (KY KY NC) and T. W., 3, (KY KY NC).
James Witten / Whitten was b. ca 1815. Appears in Grayson County census records as age 35 in 1850, age 44 in 1860, age 54 in 1870 and age 64 in 1880.
His 1/w was Elizabeth Jane Williams, d/o James C. Williams. They were probably married about 1836. According to Mt Moriah Cem records, Elizabeth Jane was b. 1 May 1820 and d. 8 Dec 1859. They were the parents of: 1. John James b. ca 1837 (13-1850 / 23-1860); 2. Margaret A., b. 1 Aug 1840, d. 16 Jun 1894, m. by 1875 to Jefferson G. Skaggs, s/o Isham Skaggs and Rachel Downs; 3. Biran / Hiram, b. ca 1843 (7-1850 / 16-1860); 4. Barton, b. 29 Mar 1844; d. 1862/3; bur. Mt Moriah Cem; 5. Matilda J., b. ca 1847 (3-1850 / 13-1860); 6.
