LANE Juanita E. Lane, 82, of Portsmouth, Ohio, died at Hillview Retirement Center on July 31, 2004 after a lifetime dedicated to family, community, charity, and healing. Juanita was born on January 8, 1922 in Portsmouth, Ohio, the second daughter of William Fred and Martha Widdig. She was a 1939 graduate of South Webster High School and a 1942 graduate of Portsmouth General Hospital's School of Nursing. She married Kennard E. Lane Sr. of South Webster, Ohio in 1943 and both subsequently served their country in World War II. Juanita, also known as "Bill" by friends and family, served in the US Army Nursing Corp in Great Britain during her tour of duty. After the end of the war, Ken and Juanita began a storybook life together as career soldier and army wife. Their travels took them around the world including the Island of Guam, Germany, and many cities throughout the United States. Juanita was able to raise three sons, run her household, and further her career as a Registered Nurse. She was instrumental in developing the first specialized geriatric medical care unit in the state of Michigan in 1966. She retired from nursing as a supervisor at Scioto Memorial Hospital in Portsmouth in 1975. However, she was coaxed out of retirement by Dr. Calvin Rodeheffer to open the nursing home at Hillview Retirement Center as its first Director of Nursing. Juanita was very active at Manly United Methodist Church and volunteered for several community organizations, including Hillview Retirement Center, the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and the local food pantry. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, her only sibling Lena Hunt, and her husband of 44 years Lt. Col. Kennard Lane. Her loss is mourned by surviving family: sons, Kennard (Vicki) Lane, Jr. of Portsmouth, Ohio, Dr. Gerald (Kimberly) Lane of Dublin, Ohio, Robert (Betsey) Lane, Esq. of Bexley, Ohio; and nephew, James Hunt and his family of Portsmouth, Ohio. Juanita is also survived by grandchildren, Kennard (Jena) Lane III of Chicago, Illinois, Blair (Tina) Lane of Upper Arlington, Ohio, John and Nicholas Lane of Dublin, Ohio, Anna and Fred Lane of Grandview Heights, Ohio, Danielle Lane of Bexley, Ohio, Anne-Marie Lee, Rebekah Spikes, Robert Williams of Findlay, Ohio, and Tommy Williams of Cleveland, Tennessee. There are also nine great-grandchildren, including Bennett Lane of Chicago, Illinois. Her close friend, Robert Luther of Portsmouth, also mourns her death. At Juanita's request, there will be no funeral service. The family will schedule a memorial service at a later date. Friends and family who wish to honor Juanita's memory are asked not to send flowers, but are encouraged to make a donation in Juanita's name to one of the following charities: The Alzheimer's Association, The American Heart Association, Manly United Methodist Church, or Hospice of Southern Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of the BRANT FUNERAL SERVICE in Portsmouth. Juanita's family expresses their sincere gratitude toward the caregivers and staff of Hillview Retirement Center and Hospice of Southern Ohio.
