Her paternal grandparents were George Washington Spencer and Emma; her maternal grandparents were John Floyd and Gilla Read. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hubert, Calvin, Lacy, Jr, Paul, Hallie P., Lena P., Zeda Frances, Anna, Melea, Emma J. and Cova.
