Phillip SCHILLINGER Is Victim; Fails To Regain Consciousness
Philip SCHILLINGER, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry SCHILLINGER, 1621 Grandview avenue, died about 7 o'clock Thursday morning in the Portsmouth General hospital, the result of a fracture of the skull sustained in a motorcycle accident.
The accident occurred Wednesday night about 9:30 o'clock when the motorcycle young SCHILLINGER was riding crashed into the rear of an automobile owned by Raymond HODGES, of Cole's Park, West Side, while the car was parked on Eleventh Street, west of Hutchins.
SCHILLINGER was hurled over the handle bars of his motorcycle and struck the pavement with sufficient force to fracture his skull. He was rushed to the Portsmouth General hopital. He failed to regain consciousness.
An examination of the injured man disclosed that he was suffering a fracture of the skull at the base of the brain. He also suffered numerous bruises and cuts about the face and body.
According to Hodge he was in his car, an Essex coach, parked on the south side of Eleventh street headed east. He says he heard a motorcycle approaching with a cut-out open and looked back through the rear glass of his car and saw the motorcycle ... ... fast clip east on Eleventh street. HODGE says that as the motorcycle neared his car it apparently struck a rough place in the street and leaped into the air and crashed against the rear of his car.
The gasoline tank on the motorcycle was punctured and the gasoline ignited causing the cycle to catch fire. HODGE saw the flames leaping around the gasoline tank on his car and drove it several yards up the street out of the path of the flames. Had the tank exploded SCHILLINGER would have been burned before aid could have reached him. HODGE then ran back to SCHILLIGER and a passing car stopped and the driver aided HODGE in placing the form of SCHILLINGER in his car in which he was taken to Dr. Carl G. BRAUNLIN's office. Dr. BRAUNLIN ordered him moved to the hospital.
The fire department was called, the Hilltop and East End companies responding. The flames were extinguished with chemicals.
Patrolmen Kenneth CARTER, Walter SULLINS and Paul FREDERICK hurried to the scene and took charge of the situation.
SCHILLINGER was unconscious when he reached the hospital and at first his idendity was not known. Patrolman Kenneth CARTER indentified him at the hospital.
SCHILLINGER was employed at the Jacobs meat market on Eleventh street. The motorcycle was completely demolished. The Essex suffered a damaged rear bumper.
SCHILLINGER is survived by his parents and six brothers and three sisters; Mrs. Marie WINTERS, of California, Mrs. Ralph TRICE, of Fourth street, Henry, Lawrence, Miss Frances, Norman, Harold, Edgar and Paul at home.
Funeral services will be held from the St. Mary's church, probably Saturday.
SCHILLINGER was an examplary young man and possessed a wide circle of friends.
