Narrative

From The Tatum Narrative--The Third Generation in the Province of West New Jersey:
John Tatum (Tatem) yeoman, merchant, Approved Minister Among Friends.
The son of John Tatem and Sarah Lord, born at Woodbury, Gloucester County, West New Jersey, 3 mos. 4th 1739 O.S., now 15th day of 6 Mo. New Stle 1739; the third of his line to bear the name of John and the first of his line to adopt the letter "U" in place of "E" in the spelling of his surname, to which spelling his descendants have since adhered. The spelling in the body of his marriage certificate 6 Mo. 23 1780 when he was married to Elizabeth Cooper is given "Tatem" while he subscribed his name to this certificate "Tatum". The children by this first wife who was Sarah Ward and their families spell their names Tatum. In Fourth Month 1762, just before his first marriage, John Tatem was received into membership with Friends and it appears that about this time he adopted the letter "U" in the spelling of his name.
