re harried for recusancy. H e was imprisoned in the Fleet
, where in September, 1580, he wa s allowed his wife's comp
any, and access to the gardens for hi s health.

Of old Lincolnshire stock, Robert Tyrwhitt inherited a trad
ition of service to the crown: his grandfather had been a k
night of the body and his father, who received his knightho
od at Tournai, was an outstanding figure in his shire. Thro
ugh his grand-mother Tyrwhitt could claim to be linked by m
