ELIZABETH MURE, the 1st wife (though never queen) of Rober
t II, is a shadowy figure of whom little is known. Her fath
er was Sir Adam Mure of Rowallan and she was probably bor
n in about 1 315, the year after Bannockburn. She and Rober
t lived together for some years before their marriage, duri
ng which time she bore him 9 children. They finally marrie
d by special dispensation of Pope Clement VI, 22 November 1
347, by which all their children were legitimated per subse
quens matrimonium. At this time Robert was still only Ear
l of Strathearn; thus, although Elizabeth became Counte s
s of Strathearn, she was never queen of Scots, since she di
ed before her husband ascended th e throne. From the fact t
hat Robert married again in 1355, we must infer that Elizab
eth had died by that date.
Elizabeth and Robert were married in a religious ceremony on November 22nd, 1347 in Kyle, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had four sons and five daughters, named Robert John, Walter, Duke Of Albany, Alexander, Margaret, Elizabeth, Marjory, Isabella Eupheme and Jean.
