acy's nephew Robert de Lacy (who m. Isabel Plantagenet) see
ms to have been allowed to inherit the honour as soon as hi
s father's death became known.  He left no heirs, and, as t
here were no other surviving heirs of either Henry or Ilber
t II, the succession devolved on the great-grandson of Henr
y's sister Alberda:  Roger 'Helle', constable of Chester, w
ho took the name Lacy when he was allowed to inherit the la
nds.  He had to pay a relief of three thousand
marks, three times the amount that Robert had paid sixtee
n years before.
Thus the honours of Halton and Widnes became joined to thos
e of Pontefract
and Clitheroe built up by the first Lacy line, the whole fo
rming the basis
of the power of the earls of Lincoln in the next century."
