Walter was born about 1290 in Hamstall, Ridware, Staffordshire, England. Walter's father was Thomas Ridware and his mother was Margaret Ridware. His paternal grandparents were Walter Ridware and Ellen FitzHerbert; his maternal grandparents were Roger Ridware and Agnes FitzHerbert. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Robert and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the four children.-
