Gavriil was born about 0970 in Ohrid, Makedonija, Yugoslavia. Gavriil's father was Samuil "Kometopulos" and his mother was Agatha Chryselia. His paternal grandparents were Nikola Kumet and Countess of West Bulgaria Ripsimia; his maternal grandfather was Ionnis Chryselios. He had a brother and a sister, named King of Bulgaria and Princess of Bulgaria. He was the oldest of the three children. He died about 1015.-
