Lydia's father was John Hoyt and her mother was Elizabeth Challis. Her maternal grandparents were Lt. Philip Watson-Challis and Mary Sargent. She had a brother and a sister, named Daniel and Mary. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Jacob, Philip, Ralph, Elizabeth and Mary.
