Payn was born about 1086. Payn's father was John "Monoculus" FitzNigell de Lacy. His paternal grandfather was Nigell de Lacy. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Payne, Eustace Fitzjohn Clavering, William, Agnes and Alice. He was the second youngest of the six children. Payn is no longer alive.
