His paternal grandparents were Thomas Booth and Elena De Workesley; his maternal grandparents were Henry Trafford and Margery Ince. He had eight brothers and six sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Matthew, William, Richard, Roger, John, Ralph, Margery, Johanna, Joan, Alice, Catherine and Lucy. He was the third oldest of the fifteen children.-
