A John Rutledge came to St. Mary's Co. MD in 1640.  The following year he was granted 100 acres on St. George's Creek, St. Mary's Co. in return for laving paid his own passage.  The St. Mary's Co. Court House burned down in 1831 and apparently all the records with it.  The St. Mary's Co. Historical Society never heard of him.  I sent them a copy of the grant.  None of the books, and there are several, that have been published about St. Mary's Co. ever mention him.  Another Rutledge descendant claims that he found information in the British Museum, London, to the effect that John came in a group led by Jon Lluger, later spelled Lewher.  The book I have, HISTORY OF ST. MARY'S COUNTY by Hammett, has a lot to say about Lluger but does not say that he rounded up people in England and brought them over.  He emigrated in 1637.  Later there were religious and political differences and many settlers moved north in MD or to VA.
