Tennessee was born on May 23rd, 1853 in Reddies River,Wilkes County,North Carolina. Tennessee's father was Abraham Kilby and her mother was Naomi Serena Dancy. Her paternal grandparents were Abraham Kilby and Mary Elizabeth (Betsey) Rash; her maternal grandparents were John Dancy and Rachel Johnson. She had a brother and six sisters, named John Sidney, Elizabeth, Ellen, Permelia, Ann, Alva and America. She was the third youngest of the eight children. She died at the age of 34 in 1887.-
