Robert was born on April 12th, 1772 in near Parsons,W VA. Robert's father was John Cunningham and his mother was Catherine Shuman. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Cunningham and Elizabeth Harris; his maternal grandparents were John Shuman and Elizabeth Smith. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, David, Ezekiel, John, Joshua and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the seven children.-
