Cateyrn Ap Gwrtheyrn's father was Gwrtheyrn Gwrtheneu Ap Gwidol and his mother was Severa Ferch Macsen Wledig.  His paternal grandfather was Gwidol Ap Gwiddin; his maternal grandparents were Magnus Clemens Maximus and Ceindrech Ferch Rheiden. He had a brother named Brydw Ap Gwrtheyrn.  He died in 0457.

He had a biological son named Cadell Ddyrnllug Ap.
