Walter's father was Gilbert Fitzrichard de Clare and his mother was Adelaide de Clermont. His paternal grandparents were Richard Fitzgilbert de Clare and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de Clermont and Margaret de Roucy.
