William de Braose Sheriff of Herefordshire 
William was born in 1126 in Abergavenny, Gwent, Wales. William's father was Philip de Braose and his mother was Aenor de Totnais. His paternal grandparents were William de Braose Lord Bramber and Agnes de St Clair; his maternal grandparents were Judeal Jobel de Totenais Lord Barnstable and ? de Pecguifny. He was an only child. William was very fortunate in his marriage to Berta. All of her brothersdied young without heirs so she brought a number of important lordshipsto the de Braoses in 1166. These included Brecon and Abergavenny. Williambecame Sheriff of Hereford in 1174. His interest in Sussex was maintainedas he confirmed the grants of his father and grandfather for themaintenance of Sele Priory and extended St. Mary's, Shoreham. (right)
