Sir Gilbert Stapelton, of Cotherstone, second son of Sir Miles the firstBaron, married Agnes, one of the daughters and co-heirs of BrianFitzAlan, Lord of Bedale, and from this match the Stapeltons of Bedaleand Norfolk, Carlton, Wighill, and Myton are all descended. Gilbert'swife, like his brother Sir Nicholas, came of the noble family of Brittanyand Richmond, the FitzAlans deriving from a younger son of Alan FergauntCount of Brittany, who came over with the Conqueror.
