Thomas' father was William II Bowes and his mother was Maud Fitz Hugh Heiress. His paternal grandparents were William I Bowes and Jane de Dacre Baroness of Greystoke; his maternal grandparents were William-Henry Fitz Hugh Lord Ravenswath and Fitz Hugh. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Ralph I, Robert, William III, William III, Henry, Margery, Anne, Elizabeth, Isabella and Katherine.-
