Artaxerxes the name of several ancient Persian kings. Artaxerxes I, , was
a member of the ACHAEMENID dynasty. Artaxerxes is the Greek form of the
Persian name Ardashir. He succeeded his father, Xerxes I, in whose
assassination he had no part. The later weakness of the Persian empire is
commonly traced to his reign. Artaxerxes II, d. 358 B.C.E. (r.404-358
B.C.E.), was the son and successor of DARIUS II. CYRUS THE YOUNGER
attempted to assassinate him but was crushed (401 B.C.E.). During his
reign the provinces of the empire became restless. His son, Artaxerxes
III, d. 338 B.C.E. (r.358-338 B.C.E.), gained the throne by a general
massacre of his brother's family. Throughout his reign he continued a
policy of terror, and he was finally poisoned by one of his ministers.
