Gwerystan Ap was born about 0940 in Powys,Wales.  Gwerystan Ap's father was Gwaithfoed 'Fawr' Ap Gwrydr and his mother was Morfydd Verch Ynyr.  His paternal grandfather was Gwrydr 'Hir' Ap Caradog; his maternal grandparents were Ynyr Of Gwent and Joyce Baladon. He had two brothers named Elystan Ap and Cyrdrig Ap.  He was the oldest of the three children.
