Diego's father was Alonso Velazquez de Covarrubias y Lisperguer and his mother was Maria Clara Ginebra Montero del Aguila.  His paternal grandparents were Juan Alfonso Velazquez de Covarrubias  and Petronila Lisperguer Solorzano; his maternal grandparents were Diego Gonzales Montero  y Justiniano and Ana Jofre del Aguila y Vega Sarmiento.  He was an only child.
