Also Known As:<_AKA> Nicholas Fitz Gilbert
BIRTH: Nicholas Fitz Gilbert de Talbois changed his name to Nicholas de Radeclive when he was given tha manor of Redclyffe by Baron de Marsey.
ORIGINS: Most Norman surnames derived from their place of origin. However, this was not true of Nicholas de Tailbois, whose lineage can trace both name and descent from the Norman Conquest. The name of Talbot was borne by many of Duke William's followers who were not necessarily connected by blood. As a younger son of the Baron of Kendal, Nicholas de Tailbois wanted to shed his record of foreign origin by assuming the style and title of an Englishman. He adopted the surname of his manor and hence was known as Sir Nicholas Redclyffe, meaning Nicholas of the Red Cliff.
