John de Stourton , Sir Knight 
John de was born before 1334 in Stourton with Gasper, Mere, Wiltshire, England. John de's father was William de Stourton , Sir Knight and his mother was Joan (Jane) Vernon. His paternal grandparents were Ralph de Stourton and Alice Berkeley; his maternal grandfather was Richard Vernon. He was an only child. He died after 1380 in Stavordale Abbey, Somerset, England.General Notes
At this point the history both of the manor and of the family of Stourton becomes obscure. The pedigree gives Ralph two sons, Eudes (who is said to have d. young) and William, whose son John, according to the "History of the Noble House of Stourton", was sheriff in 1377; and this may be correct. John de Stourton (h), 1st son and heir. From 1355 to 1378 he was in commissions for Somerset. In 1374 he founded a chantry for himself, his wife and his parents (j). From 1377 to 1379 he was escheator for Somerset and Dorset. In 1380 he was licenced to acquire land in Preston Plucknett. He m. 1stly Lettice (m); and 2ndly Alice, who survived him. The date and place of his death are unknown. [Complete Peerage XII/1:300]
(h) He is described by his younger son John Stourton of Preston Plucknett as "sometimes Lord of Stourton".
(j) See note "f" above, which is: (f) Where it is set out an impeximus and confirmation by the Dean and Chapter of Wells of an appropriation made 18 Mar 1374 of a chantry for the souls of John de Stourton and Alice is wife, William de Stourton and Joan his wife (both deceased, the parents of John), his brethren and sisters, and Lettice and Alice his wives.
(m) See note "f" above. She was probably the mother of his elder son William, who is described in the reference given in preceding note as William son of John, not of John and Alice.

Note: The approximate birth of John was definitely bef. 1334, because he was of age and in commissions by 1355. His eldest son William, heir of Stourton, was active on various commissions by "1382" (ie. of age in 1382 so he was b. bef 1361), "d. 18 Sep 1413", and didn't marry until "bef. 1398", his son & heir being "b. abt 1399". The items in quotes are Complete Peerage dates. Of course he could have married well before 1398. William refused to take the position of Speaker of the House of Commons because he was infirm in 1413, I think he could have been 50 or more then.
