Thomas de was born about 1235 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England.  Thomas de's father was Thomas de Furnival , of Sheffield & Worsop, Sir and his mother was Bertha de Ferrers.  His paternal grandparents were Gerard de Furnival and Maud de Luvetot , Heir of Sheffield & Worksop; his maternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley. He had a brother and a sister, named Gerard de and Margaret de.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died on May 12th, 1291 in Castle, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.  He was buried in Friars Minors Church, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England.
