Thomas de was born about 1235 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England. Thomas de's father was Thomas de Furnival , of Sheffield & Worsop, Sir and his mother was Bertha de Ferrers. His paternal grandparents were Gerard de Furnival and Maud de Luvetot , Heir of Sheffield & Worksop; his maternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley. He had a brother and a sister, named Gerard de and Margaret de. He was the youngest of the three children. He died on May 12th, 1291 in Castle, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. SIR THOMAS DE FURNIVALLE, of Sheffield, co. York, Worksop and Grassthorpe, Notts, Eyam, Stoney Middleton, and Brassington, co. Derby, brother and heir of Sir Gerard DE FURNIVALLE, of Sheffield, Worksop, &c. (who died s.p. before 18 Oct. 1261), and 2nd son of Sir Thomas DE FURNIVALLE (g), by Berta, his wife (h). On 25 July 1270 he had licence to build a stone castle, at Sheffield, and fortify and crenellate it. He was summoned for Military Service from 18 October 1261 to 16 April 1291, and to attend the King at Shrewsbury, 28 June 1283, by writs directed Thome de Furnivall'. The name of his wife is unknown. He died 12 May 1291, and was buried in the Church of the Friars Minors at Doncaster. [Complete Peerage V:580-1, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(g) He, who was living 13 Apr 1238, was son & heir of Gerard de Furnivalle, by Maud (living 23 June 1247), daughter and heir of William de Luvetot, Lord of Worksop (who was dead in 1181), by Maud (aged 24 in 1185), daughter of Walter fitz Robert. The younger Maud was stated in 1185 to be aged 7, but she and Gerard her husband, were said to be both under age, 12 Mar 1200/1: they had livery of her father's lands, 20 May 1203. Gerard was son and heir of Gerard de Furnivalle, who accompanied Richard I in his crusade.
(h) This Berta was living 10 Feb 1266/7. She had m. 2ndly Ralph le Bigod, whose widow she was, 28 July 1260.
